penguin250.jpgStuck for what to buy your loved ones at Christmas? Why not consider giving the gift of adopting a Little Penguin from the Phillip Island Nature Parks Penguin Foundation.

The Penguin Foundation was established to protect the cute waddling birds. The major risk posed to penguins is humans. While penguin numbers are healthy they are fragile animals, with deaths being caused by land and sea oil spills, plastic rubbish and introduced animals including foxes, cats and dogs. Natural hazards for penguins are fish shortages, rough weather sharks and birds.

The Foundation raises and allocates funds to projects ranging from penguin rescue and rehabilitation to building new penguin nesting areas, monitoring penguin health and behaviour and protecting the Little Penguins’ natural environment. Resources are also used to undertake other associated wildlife and conservation activities on and around Phillip Island.

By giving the gift of a penguin the recipient will receive regular updates on the life of their penguin throughout the year – its health, what it’s eating, whether it’s been cheeky, how it interacts with other penguins, even if it’s in love (often with the same sex!); a photo of their penguin; membership to the Penguin Foundation; free entry to the Phillip Island Nature Parks Penguin Parade; and an exclusive invitation to the Penguin Foundation Members Open Day.

Celebrities who are ambassadors of the Penguin Foundation and the Adopt a Penguin Project include Joan Rivers, Katrina Warren, Andrew Denton, Kerri-Anne Kennerly, Vanessa Amorosi and Kylie Minogue.

Penguin facts: The penguins at Phillip Island are the smallest of 17 species of penguins in the world at just 33cm tall; a Little Penguin can actually sleep at sea, dozing as it floats on the surface and a Little Penguin can stay at sea for weeks, diving for fish, yet its waterproof feathers keep its skin absolutely dry.
