p19_feature_mg_250.jpgJESS MCAVOY

During the past 10 years, Perth gal Jess McAvoy has toured with the likes of Ani diFranco and The Waifs. Her album Into the Dark (2006), recorded with Aria award winner Marty Brown (Clare Bowditch, Art of Fighting), got rave reviews and was named album of the week in Beat magazine. You can catch this talented performer at the Mardi Gras Festival Bar @ the Supper Club. Joining her will be trans rock chick Jade Starr and her band Dreadcircus, and Maxine Kauter. p19_feature_mg_hotpicks_250.jpgCARY FROM THE COCK

New Yorker Cary Curran describes herself as the “America’s quintessential, but not at all typical fag hag” and boasts about having been “thrown out of at least 15 bars”. Check out her show Cary from the Cock, which proves that it’s always better to strip yourself bare (literally) than repress and stay dressed. Dance, original songs, monologues and video feature in Cary’s warped tour of her life from confused Catholic teen to downtown queen. More on Cary at www.carycurran.com

p19_feature_mg__image3_250.jpgJOURNAL OF PEDDLE DREAMS

The spotlight is shone on the life of Australian novelist Eve Langley, born in 1908, who claimed Oscar Wilde as her alter ego, even going so far as to adopt the name by deed poll. Known for wearing ‘mannish’ clothes and for her eccentricity, Langley’s
novels belong to a tradition of Australian women's writing that explores the conflict between being an artist and being a woman. Australian born Elizabeth Langley, 75, now resident in Canada, brings her one-woman show to the Tap Gallery.

p19_feature_mgimage4_250.jpgSMUTTY SALSA SPECTACULAR

Back by popular demand, this all-girl extravaganza hits the Sly Fox for one night only in a refreshing show taking drag back to its political roots. Jesita Tetita MCs a whole new show of crazy and comic performances that poke fun at gender and race stereotypes by playing them up to the max. Featuring Wife, Gay Lourdes and westie boona bois Todd'n Trev all the way from Rooty Hill, and more, the night is also laced with Latin beats, so bring your dancing shoes!

p19_feature_mg_s_image5_259.jpgDYKES ON BIKES

Whether it’s a Harley or a Ducati, chicks on motorbikes are hot! And as we know from the December issue of CHERRIE, so are chicks with tats. Put the two together and you’ve got an event not to be missed: the Dykes on Bikes Bike and Tattoo Show. DOB has been leading off the Mardi Gras Parade since 1991, with all manner of grrls enjoying a good ride. Prizes are on offer for all categories of bike and tattoo at this charity fundraiser (gold coin donation).

p19_feature_mg__image6_259.jpgLESBIAN OPEN HOUSE

Is there a lesbian scene in Sydney and do you feel comfortable in it? Breaking up - is there an easy way to do it? Do you have to sleep with a woman to be sure you're a lesbian? These are just some of the topics that have come up for discussion at Lesbian Open House. In this special event, women who’ve come to Sydney for Mardi Gras are invited to meet the locals and join in the discussion of which city, town or region is the best place for dykes. All women are welcome at this trans-inclusive event.
