skinny-250.jpg Want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous? Best-selling US authors Rory Freeman and Kim Barnouin will tell you how. They spoke with Katrina Fox.

Let’s face it, some books on ‘healthy eating’ can be boring. Often written by earnest people who record the facts in an often bland manner, they are easy to discard when the next craving for cheese, chocolate or junk food grabs you.

But it’s not easy to ignore the ‘advice’ meted out by former Ford Models agent Rory Freedman and former model Kim Barnouin, whose 2005 book Skinny Bitch became a number one New York Times bestseller.

These “smart-mouthed girlfriends” take a “tough love” approach to encourage “savvy girls” to adopt healthier eating habits. The book is filled with no-nonsense and often witty remarks such as, “You cannot keep eating the same shit and expect to get skinny” or “Whenever you see the words ‘low fat’ or ‘fat free’ think of the words ‘chemical shit storm’”.

The reader is told to “sober up, asshole” and reminded that candy bars will “pitch a tent on your hips and camp out for a year” among other wisecracks in what the authors deem a necessary wake-up call.

Now lest you think this is just a couple of uneducated bimbo chicks (bitches) from the modelling industry jumping on the fad diet bandwagon, you couldn’t be more wrong. Freedman and Barnouin have really done their research and Barnouin holds a Masters of Science degree in Holistic Nutrition.

In Skinny Bitch, the truth behind the food we eat is exposed – from the “rotting, decomposing corpses” masquerading as ‘hamburgers’ or ‘roast beef’ and “addictive, disease-producing dairy” to the harmful chemicals that go into certain processed foods.

Not to mention the terrible acts that take place in abbatoirs: cows’ skin is sliced from their heads while they are still conscious and their spinal cords severed to stop them struggling; before pigs bleed to death they are dunked fully conscious into 140-degree scalding water; chickens’ beaks are chopped off their faces with no anaesthetic and are later boiled alive. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“For each of us, it was being confronted with the truths about factory farming and slaughterhouses,” Freedman tells CHERRIE. “It’s hard to call yourself an ‘animal lover’ and then knowingly contribute to the most unspeakable atrocities against animals…all because you like the taste of meat. After learning about the whole bloody mess, we each decided to get our diets aligned with our principles.”

The title of the book is deliberately pro-vocative, but before you can say ‘fat is a feminist issue’ Freedman and Barnouin are quick to point out they’re not advocating women be ‘skinny’ in its literal meaning. “A Skinny Bitch is someone who enjoys food, eats well, and loves her body as a result. It has nothing to do with how much you weigh or what size you are!” they proclaim on their website.

“We want everyone to take better care of themselves,” Freedman adds. “Our bodies need and deserve to be treated with love and reverence. That means eating well, exercising, and loving ourselves, regardless of what sizes we wear, how much we weigh, or what our boobs look like.

Skinny Bitch promotes a healthy lifestyle, an awareness of ingredients, and a love of eating. Everyone who reads the book cover to cover knows that, despite the title, we’re all about self-empowerment. And that the title was just a cheap ploy to get people to read the book!”

It obviously worked, with the book garnering a huge amount of international publicity and critical acclaim, as well as kudos among celebrities. “Shana Moakler and Jerry Stackhouse [NBA player for the Dallas Mavericks] both credited the book for changing their ways,” Barnouin says. “And Victoria Beckham, Jessica Alba and Gemma Atkinson, a British soap star, were all spotted holding the book.”

Freedman and Barnouin have followed up on the success of their original book with the newly released Skinny Bitch in the Kitch which offers up a list of scrumptious ‘Kick-Ass Recipes for Hungry Girls Who Want to Stop Cooking Crap (and Start Looking Hot!)’. And they’re not stopping there.

“We’ve got a how-to-eat guide for pregnant women coming out in December 2008, Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven,” Barnouin says. “And in December 2009, our book for men will hit the shelves, Skinny Bastard.”

So if you think embracing an animal-free diet equals ‘boring’ or denying yourself pleasure, grab yourself a copy of Skinny Bitch, and find out how you can indulge in all number of mouth-watering and cruelty-free delights while staying healthy and looking absolutely fabulous.

Skinny Bitch and Skinny Bitch in the Kitsch are available in all good bookstores. More info: www.skinnybitch.net

My mother and my sister have both read this book and I read enough to know that these women and many others who think the same way haven't exactly had their heads on straight.

I am sick to death of 'vegetarians' and 'vegans' and so-called self-righteous animal rights people, especially PETA, which by the way is an organization suspected of domestic terrorist activities, and these two women may even be involved.

People like this seldom think rationally, and as an avid, self-taught culinarian, not to mention a writer, the narrow-minded way in which people have understood food and how it has been meat, dairy, grain and mainly root vegetables which have literally been the backbone of civilizations all over the globe stretching back by thousands perhaps millions of years.

One of the stupidest statements made by these two woman and also Dr Weil is that humans are the only species who consume the dairy of another animal.

I happen to know for a fact that this isn't true. Many nocturnal animals including cats, fruit bats, as well as ferets and their weasel cousins literally live on meat and dairy. There are several species of animals who in fact are not even able to consume vegetation of any kind, their systems are not set up to process it!

Not to mention I have seen demonstrations of cross-animal maternal instinct when it comes to a baby animal! I've seen a cow allow a lost baby Honey Bear to drink milk from her teats! It was the cutest thing and the cow was totally calm about the whole thing. I've seen a fruit bat literally lap up milk from a Jersey cow that was so full of sugar and natural fat, that it was almost too thick to pour!

Why is it that people seem to have this conception in their minds that it is somehow healthier to be a vegetarian or vegan? I have seen absolutely no evidence of this; in fact, in many cases I have seen exactly the opposite.

In fact, I met one poor chap who, due to his body's inability to process meat wasn't able to eat it! Believe me, he didn't really want to be a vegetarian either, this was a medical problem which required him to have B-12 shots and a number of other shots almost every day just to keep him alive!

If anyone ever says that B-12 along with a good many completed forms certain amino acids and minerals can ever come from vegetables especially B-12 than it is a totally untrue and misleading statement. It is a thoroughly proven scientific fact that B-12, a vitamin which is vital to life, is only produced through meat, especially beef!

Plus, with all of the diet crazes that [have] sprung up, you could actually call it what my nutritionist has called it: "The Trojan Horse"! The craze over eliminating natural fat and also going vegetarian hasn't exactly helped with the diabetes and obesity! In fact it's actually set a good many people up for real problems!

I just hope more people start thinking for theirselves before listening blindly to people like these two women. By the way, I'm friends with someone who once was a model and sometimes still is, and trust me I've seen how these people are! Some of them are great people, but unfortunately due to the nature of their work as models they don't really 'diet' they starve theirselves and even do drugs and nearly become alcoholics! They also have an eating disorder for the rest of their lives which can kill them!

My friend has never been fat in her life, but she was made to lose excessive amounts of weight just so she could do modeling! She wound up having a total of three miscarriages! Fortunately, she got out of the modeling and put some weight back on so that when she got pregnant yet again she managed to have that one!

I just hope I've gotten through to some people who think for theirselves instead of jumping on a band wagon!
