Frances McDormand, Amy Adams
Director: Bharat Nalluri
Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) is a tight-lipped, repressed middle-aged London governess with a bad reputation and no time left for the poor behaviour of her spoiled charges or their ridiculous parents.
She finds herself unemployed again and, in fact, unemployable in the industry after so many clashes and dismissals. Completely penniless and literally out on the streets, she has a moment of uncharacteristic deviousness and after a series of major misunderstandings ends up employed as the sidekick for an American actress and singer called Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams).
Playing the title role in this film was definitely a bizarre choice for the otherwise outstanding Frances McDormand. There is none of her usual deadpan dryness or outstanding ability to cut through the pretence of other characters.
The script is terrible but the character of Miss Pettigrew still has the potential to let these McDormand characteristics shine. Unfortunately, they don’t shine brightly enough.
