Voices by Catherine Deneuve  and Chiara Mastroianni

Director: Marjane Satrapi with Vincent Paronnaud

4 thumbs up

Persepolis is an extraordinary animation about Marjane Satrapi’s childhood in Tehran, and her flight to Austria and eventually France. Taken from her hugely successful graphic novel of the same name, Satrapi leads us on a rollercoaster journey of self-discovery and identity. As Khomeini’s hardline regime drags the country back to the Middle Ages life becomes very difficult even dangerous for the free-spirited and cheeky Marjane and she is sent to Austria by her wealthy liberal parents. However Marjane soon discovers that life as an Iranian in Europe is not all that she hoped and she returns to Iran. The free-wheeling 2D style animation manages to convey both the tragic and the comic as well as give us insight into Marjane’s wild imagination. Make sure you see this truly original film before it disappears.
