An enterprising group of mates, known as the Recreational Arts Team, made House explode on the Sydney scene by organising more than 30 RAT parties between 1983 and 1992. The core of the team was Jac Vidgen, Billy Yip and Reno Dal, who together brought a new phenomenon of underground dance party and art culture to Sydney and Australia.
The RAT parties started small in Surry Hills but soon moved up to massive parties for over 10,000 punters in the Hordern Pavillion and RHI, complete with sideshow alley, chill spaces, food stalls, celebrity sightings and Ecstacy. I remember jealously hearing about my mates dancing alongside Michael Hutchence and entourage and enjoying hours on the dancefloor to DJs such as Rob Racic, Scott Pullen and many others who went on to form the core of the Sydney House movement.
Australian dance music was born.
