STOP THE BIGOTRY PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 June 2008

Thanks for featuring local singer/motivational speaker Dominique Khoury in the June edition (#009). We can totally relate to what Dominique goes through. Bec and I have been together for well over 10 years and we still get asked if we are a couple.

Apparently we are ‘too girly’ to be in a committed lesbian relationship. We both not only face homophobia and discrimination in the straight community, but also in the gay community. At times we feel like we don’t fit in anywhere and it makes things difficult sometimes.

Since when does how long your hair is, or whether you wear make-up or not determine your sexuality? No offence, but if we both had short hair, a few tats and piercings and wore casual clothing I bet you we wouldn’t get asked twice about our sexuality. It’s not logical! It’s like comparing yourself with what flavour or name brand toothpaste you use!

STOP the bigotry! Support your community. And accept people for who they are, not what they are or look like. We are glad that this issue has been finally raised! Go Dominique. We love you girl!

DOMINIQUE ROCKS PDF Print E-mail

I saw Dominique sing at International Women’s Day earlier this year with a bunch of friends. Her rendition of Concrete Blondes’ ‘Joey’ and Pink’s ‘Dear Mr. President’ completely blew us away. She even brought a crowd of curious soccer players over to see her on stage. She has a very unique voice and definitely sings from her heart – soulful like the article described. Thanks CHERRIE!

APPRECIATING WITHOUT DESIRE PDF Print E-mail

Re ‘Queering Desire’ (#009): There was a big discussion in the Perth lesbian scene recently with an event that was ‘Playboy Mansion’ themed. There was an uproar all in all, however I like to draw point to the Spice Girl phenomenon. That is, you can appreciate whilst not desire. You cannot deny that the Spice Girls are very talented and brilliant at what they do, however, I don’t like them or their music. Similarly you can appreciate and admire without attraction.

A ‘WOMYN’S’ VIEW PDF Print E-mail

Re ‘Kinky Business’ (#009): This IS self abuse. Each to their own but hey ... come on now! This article is degrading, especially to womYn. What message does it send out to womYn? As a professional in the health field, I suggest that you take a step back and look at what you are doing to your body. Dig deeper into yourself and acknowledge your underlying issues. This is no role modelling. Oh! And how us feminists fought for womYn’s rights.

What are we doing to ourselves ladies!
