Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Radha Mitchell, Chow Yun-fat
Director: Roger Spottiswoode
This epic story is based on the real-life escapades of a young, British journalist named George Hogg (Rhys Meyers). It is also the first Australia-China co-production. Hogg was hanging around China in the late 1930s when he witnessed the Japanese attack on Nanking, was threatened with execution and saved by a Chinese partisan, Jack Chen (Chow Yun-fat). He decided to stay on to support a group of boys orphaned by the attack. Radha Mitchell, stunning as always, plays an American nurse who joins him on a trek over the mountains to find a secure place for the boys. It is somewhat frustrating to see her playing an American yet again, even though she is taking part in an Australian co-production, but her performance is still excellent. Rhys Meyers is also very powerful, as is screen veteran Yun-fat. But look out for Michelle Yeoh as Mrs Wang. Now getting on in years, Yeoh, once the kung fu queen of Hong Kong action, is definitely still dazzling. 3 THUMBS UP
