THE SECRET OF THE GRAIN
Habib Boufares, Hafsia Herzi, Faridah Benkhetache
Director: Abdellatif Kechiche
This outstanding French drama has already won a host of awards at home and abroad. At the Venice Film Festival alone it won the Special Jury Prize, FIPRESCI Prize and a nomination for the Golden Lion.
At home it was awarded four major prizes at the Cesars, the French Academy Awards. The Secret of the Grain takes us into the heart of the French-Algerian community of a small harbour town called Sete where the once flourishing fishing industry is fast becoming a dying art. Slimane (Habib Boufares) is feeling the pinch after 35 years working the yards.
He dreams big, hoping opening his own restaurant will help him get out of his dead end. His colourful extended family gets involved, including his girlfriend’s daughter Rym, played by Hafsia Herzi, who won a Cesar for her stunning performance in this film. The Secret of the Grain offers access to the everyday rhythms of these superbly captured lives.
