Sally Hawkins, Alexis Zegerman, Eddie Marson
Director: Mike Leigh
Happy-Go-Lucky was the opening night film of this year’s Sydney Film Festival and marks a much more comic turn for an otherwise rather dark and gritty director. Mike Leigh makes amazing films, often created through sophisticated improvisation techniques that draw out unique performances from his actors. You may remember Brenda Blethyn got seriously famous after her incredible performance in Leigh’s Secrets and Lies (1996) where she played Cynthia, a woman who forms a new relationship with the daughter she secretly gave away for adoption. Sally Hawkins won Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival for this performance in Happy-Go-Lucky as the relentlessly cheerful Poppy, a London teacher with a sparklingly optimistic disposition. Go along for the ride as Poppy takes on her world with gusto, embracing everything from difficult driving lessons to hilarious tango dance classes. 4 THUMBS UP
