Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson
Director: Craig Gillespie
The intensely introverted Lars (Ryan Gosling) suddenly has a girlfriend, Bianca. His brother, Gus (Paul Schneider), and sister-in-law Karin (Emily Mortimer) are thrilled.
Their delight quickly turns to horror when they discover Bianca isn’t a real woman but an “anatomically correct” Real Doll. (Check out Real Dolls on the net and you’ll understand what all the fuss is about!) It’s the family GP, Dagmar (played by the always mysterious Patricia Clarkson) who suggests they go along for the ride (so to speak) with Lars and his delusion that this doll really is real.
In fact, the whole town ends up making the effort to embrace Bianca as part of their community with some seriously touching/hilarious results.
What emerges is an unexpectedly powerful tale about negotiating family and learning be loved, thanks to outstanding performances from the whole cast. Ryan Gosling and Emily Mortimer in particular ham it up big time while somehow still managing, impressively, to keep it real.
