3 Thumbs Up
This is the first feature film from Kimberly Peirce since
her knock-out debut with Boys Don’t Cry,
released almost 10 years ago in 1999. Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her
portrayal of Brandon Teena and Peirce displayed her incisive talent for
investigating the dark side of masculinity. With Stop Loss, Peirce again demonstrates her capacity to venture deep
into the dark and intense depths of masculinity. This time, the political
message is of a different nature. Stop Loss is designed to raise awareness
about US soldiers forced,
via the fine print in their contract, to return for additional tours of duty in
Iraq
against their will. It’s a powerful story about the traumatic after-effects
that plague these soldiers and the issues it explores are all too real. Peirce
offers eye-opening new insights into the hypocrisies of this ongoing conflict.
