You may not know it, but every day you’re making history. It’s not the extraordinary people that make history, but the acts of millions of people in their everyday lives. All your actions and views, in some minor way either cements or changes the world and its inhabitants whether you want them to or not. Whether for the better, I don’t know. But in the future we will be studied and judged and held responsible.
Every minute of every hour in every day, millions are being tortured or slaughtered for your needs and wants. Hidden behind hundred of thousands of locked doors they are suffering. They do not know why they exist, just as you and I don‘t know for certain why we’re here. We like to believe in our dominance based on such virtues as compassion, reasoning, truths, rights and wrongs. We revel in the belief that we are the “higher species” capable of unbelievable conquests and ambitions. But all the traits that set us apart are the same ones we fail to call on in our beliefs and their subsequent treatment.
I know of all the reasons people give themselves for allowing their suffering to continue, for I held those same reasons myself. It is an extremely difficult mindset to surrender as it involves giving up those things that you believe to be your right, without getting anything in return. Try looking at the beauty of a dolphin and seeing the same beauty in the eyes of those that will be slaughtered for your consumption. Think about the suffering of the holocaust victims and know that the atrocities are still happening in thousands of research laboratories in the world.
Don’t be afraid to become a vegan – you can be cool and ethical! It’s possible and so easy nowadays to live a great and fun life without supporting cruelty and suffering, and by doing so you can make a difference in the world. At the time of your dying breath, you can feel joy knowing that you gave something in return – that you lived a principle and fought for it. For the animals, theirs is a fight that they can’t or never will win on their own. Years of dominance doctrine affixed tightly by specieism makes it a battle that at most times feels futile. But you can be their soldier, their voice, their defender and their hope. What are you waiting for?
