After hearing the devastating reports recently
that our home-grown Heath Ledger had passed away in his New York apartment, a
further blow was struck to us fellow Aussies when news claimed that, ‘Anti-Gay Protesters
Intend to Picket the Late Actor’s Memorial Service.’
I must admit when I first heard this, I
asked myself, ‘What the hell does picket
mean?’ Think about that sentence. ‘Anti-Gay’ and ‘Late Actor’ ie Heath Ledger
and you get Brokeback Mountain. Silly me, though. The
definition came to me. They planned to somehow fuck up his memorial service as
Phelps-Roper said he “misused the giant megaphone given to him by God Almighty
to speak the truth about fags”.
We know he wasn’t gay. He was with that
sexy Michelle Williams and even has a kid. Irregardless, his association, his
participation in a homosexually-based movie automatically tattooed the words
‘fag lover’ right on his forehead.
I had the shits with both Ledger’s sledging
and about the whole anti-gay craze sweeping the media. Now we have to ask ourselves,
‘Are we in any way affected by these recent events?’ Well I am. I’m pissed. Driving
home from the airport and listening to the radio interview Kyle and Jackie-O
had with the pastor’s daughter of the protesting church made me want to rear
end the poor bastard in front of me. All she could manage was, “He’s going to
burn in hell.”
Ouch. I guess that means we are all going
down there too. I know it’s just their belief but it’s not too nice to hear,
especially when several hundred thousand people believe it too. What is to come
next? I’ve had people come up and tell me that I was going to hell. And for
what? I guess it’s for being a carpet muncher.
What can we do about this? Nothing, it
seems. We’re stuck in a dilemma where turning a blind eye sweeps it under the
bed and doing something about it smears a bad name for gays and lesbians.
It’s like a game of 20 fucking questions. When
does all this gay hating and fag bashing stop?
All these questions and little or no
answers. We’re left scratching our heads at this whole issue. Homosexuality and
religion, especially Christianity which is so dominant, will always have a
problem with each other.
Fuck them. Let them hate because in the end,
I’m still smiling.
You should too.
