Ladytron debuted in 2001 with their album 604, perfecting the blend of avant garde electronics and skewed pop that we know as electro. On the recent release of their fourth album Velocifero, Ladytron find themselves again at the forefront of this genre.
Ladytron was formed when Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu, the tall dark figures at the back of the stage, discovered the women of Ladytron – Mira Aroyo (who has a PhD in genetics) and Helena Marnie – on a train in Bulgaria.
Not only was their last album Witching Hour one of the better albums of 2005, it established Ladytron as a career act; deeper sonics than the ‘flavour of the now’. For a group that sprang up right on time to define the emerging electroclash scene, they have managed to avoid the death of this style; the group's transformation to a subtly more melodic, pop-friendly, and emotionally expressive style made a lot of sense in terms of stylistic evolution and self-preservation. It is the same instinct that kept New Order and Depeche Mode going long after people stopped using the term ‘new wave’ in earnest and even if there was still plenty of detachment in their sound, the music made it feel perfectly human.
Velocifero is the sleekest, sexiest dance release of the year so far. If you want your next dinner party to feel as if it was taking place on the surface of Mars, you should look no further.
Ladytron are touring in Australia in September and October.
